9th Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards
Winners are Announced and Honored
The names of the winners of the 9th Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards (CMA), sponsored by the Citi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Citigroup and organized by the Network of the MFIs-Credit and Development Forum(CDF) were formally announced at a special ceremony. Mr. M. Abdul Mannan MP, State Minister for Finance, Ministry of Finance and Dr. Atiur Rahman, Governor, Bangladesh Bank were present as Chief Guest and Guest of Honor respectively. The each of the 8 Awards recipients were presented a crest, dummy cheque and certificate. Ms. Rokia Afzal Rahman, President of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and a former adviser to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh chaired the Awards Giving Ceremony. Mr. Richard Tesvich, Managing Director and Regional Head of Corporate Affairs, Citi Asia Pacific Region was present as Special Guest; Mr. Md. Abdul Awal, Chairperson of the 9th CMA Screening Committee and Executive Director of CDF presented the welcome address. Mr. Rashed Maqsood, Managing Director & Citi Country Officer for Bangladesh was present. Microentrepreneurs from different districts, representatives from microfinance institutions as well as senior officials from the ministries and the central bank, diplomats, dignitaries and members from the Advisory Council and Screening Committee of the 9th CMA program were also present.
Ms.Samsad Akter from Baliadangi, Thakurgoan won the ‘Best Microentrepreneur of the Year’ award and received BDT450,000/-; Samirunnahar Begum from Shamnagor, Sathkhira was Runner-up in this category and received BDT100,000/-; Rokhsana Begum from Bhaluka, Mymensingh won ‘Best Woman Microentrepreneur of the Year’ and received BDT350,000/-; Zahira Begum from Mela Kochukata, Nilphamari was Runner-up in the category of ‘Best Woman Microentrepreneur of the Year’ and received BDT100,000/-; Md. Somad Fakir from Taltoli, Borguna won ‘Best Microentrepreneur of the Year in Agriculture’ and received BDT350,000/-; Angu Sarker from Kashobpur, Jessore was ‘Best Microentrepreneur of the Year in Agriculture’ and received BDT100,000/-; Manabik Shahajya Sangstha (MSS) won ‘Best Microfinance Institution of the Year’ and received BDT300,000/-; and Sajida Foundation won ‘Most Innovative Microfinance Institution of the Year’ and received BDT400,000/-.
The Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards program has been supported by Citi Foundation and implemented by Citibank, N.A. Bangladesh with support from CDF as the local partner. Channel i, a reputed TV channel and The Daily Star - were the media partners for this program in Bangladesh and Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka was the venue partner.
